About Artist
Since 2007, I have been focusing my artistic efforts on a study of anatomy and gesture through figurative bronze sculpture as well as life drawing. I am guided by a desire to express motion, emotion and levity through the still heaviness of the metal. My body of work ranges from hand-held miniatures to mid-size pieces, and is now growing to include a focus on larger and life-size figures.
As a self taught artist, making my first sculptures in the sand on beach holidays, sculpting emerged organically for me after a 20 year career in graphic design and photography. Creating figurative work felt so natural from the first time I had the opportunity to work with clay on a trip to Mexico for my 40th birthday. Looking back, however, I see the influences that led me to this work. My years living in France, Montreal and Mexico exposed me to a rich tradition of figurative bronze sculpture, mostly in the form of public art. The monumental sculpture of the angel carrying away a dead soldier that is displayed in Vancouver’s Gastown was directly across the street from my grandfather’s barber shop when I was preschool aged. Much of the work I create even today has the flavour of the grace and lightness that I feel from that piece.
