How many pillows do I need on my sofa?

This is a fluffy question and the answer will depend on personal preferences and the size/style of your sofa. However, here's a quick reference to answer the question: How many cushions does my sofa need?

Love seats and smaller sofas under 75" long:
1-2 toss cushions

Regular size sofas, 76-89" long:  
2-4 toss cushions

Large sofas, over 90" long:
3-5 toss cushions

Large sectional sofas:
5-7 toss cushions

Other tips:
  • Remove any free cushions that come with a sofa in the same upholstery fabric as the sofa. Just do it. Move them along. Re-purpose or donate.
  • With an odd number of cushions on a sofa, have two matching and one different. The two matching can be in any pattern or shape.
  • Keep in mind all design "rules" should and can be broken. What's important is to stand back and look at the arrangement; do you like it? Leave the room and walk in again. Let your eye settle. Or take a photo. Photos will tell you what is missing or "wrong" with a space.
  • When you are lacking in sofa space or don't want so many cushions on a sofa or chair, add a luxurious throw blanket for texture/pattern.
