5 Reasons to Invest in Antique Furniture Over Built-Ins

Here are 5 reasons to invest in antique furniture over built-ins cabinetry.

1) Cost. Antique furniture is often less expensive than built-ins. Built-ins are labour and material intensive and therefore costly. Built-ins can be great but they will take a big chunk out of any budget.

2) Authenticity. There is a nuance of greatness, an authenticity, when you live with and surround yourself with real wood furniture over particle board that is made mainly of glue and wood chips. It's like choosing original art over prints. Not bad a bad thing, just one is better.

3) Flexibility. You can take antique furniture with you when you move or change its location in your home as your needs change.

4) Interest. Antique furniture has character and soul. They reflect the owner's personal style and tastes. Unless you're making the built-ins with your own hands, an antique piece of furniture will be more interesting.

5) Expectations. You know what an antique piece of furniture looks like before you make the investment. With built-ins there are drawings and sketches of course, but you do not really know how it will look until it is finished and often our expectations don't live up to the reality/output.

PS This includes the kitchen. Many exceptional kitchens have a mix of standard cabinetry and a fabulous antique case pieces. Need inspiration or help visualizing, check out deVOL Ktichens or consult with a great interior designer who can help implement an antique into a design such as Megan Baker.
